where do homestay families live?

hello
i’m going to attend an international language school in Berkeley. I will stay as a homestay, i mean that i will stay with a family and pay them monthly for room. Often the families that offer homestay are “lower class”. So my question is… Where are located this families? They told me the families live a reasonable distance away from the school (between 30 and 60 minutes by public transport).
So consider the distance and the “lower class” neightbourhood… where they could be? Which towns/neighbourhood?
Sorry for my english, it is obvious… i need to study it!
the school is located downtown berkeley
What you need to be concerned with is not the "lower class neighborhoods " but the "unsafe neighborhoods".
Ask where they are located and then check to see if that neighborhood is SAFE.
