Please help me find a homestay in Chicago?

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by admin

I am a foreigner. I came here for learning English. I am in HOU now. I plan to transfer to ELS/CHI(Dominican University) on May 6. I want to try to find a homestay on my own because it will be more expensive if I asked school to help me arrange a homstay. Now, I have some trouble. Does anybody have websites about chicago homestay or any contact way? Please do me a big favor. I appreciate you very much. :-)

Sweet Homestay Chicago website:

http://home.comcast.net/~wenckus2/about.html

A homestay provides you with an opportunity to live in a comfortable home with a friendly American family. You will be immersed in the English language and experience firsthand American culture and lifestyle. A homestay should be thought of as a home away from home.

A typical homestay visit through Sweet Homestay Chicago can range from one week to one month. Longer stays can be arranged if so desired.

Good Luck….

Does Anyone know a good homestay company in London?

Posted on February 25th, 2010 by admin

My friend is looking to stay from September until February. I dont live near London so can someone please recommend a good company?

Help much appreciated.

A friend of mine recommended London Homestays at http://www.londonhomestays.com.

They were really friendly, they have multi-lingual staff and the whole experience was very smooth. They even arrange airport pick-up if you need it.

Has anyone done a french exchange or homestay?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 by admin

Im studying french in secondary school and im in my 5th year. I really want to go over to france and study the language, and i was thinking of doing a french exchange with Dalmac or someone. The only thing is none of my friends want to do it and i would be doing it alone and was just wondering is this the best way to do it? And will the person i exchange with be in my house while im in theirs?

I’ve never done an exchange in France but I’ve done an exchange with a German school three times. The first time several of my friends went. We spent a lot of time together and had a great time. The second and third Time I was staying on my own. It was a lot more difficult, and I did get homesick, but I still had the fantastic time. The second and third time I did work experience, and not only was it great fun, but it really improved my language skills and looked great on my CV. I have been asked about it in interviews and all the interviewers were impressed by the fact that I had lived away from home and worked.

Yes, it is difficult. You will feel homesick and i is difficult to be immersed in another language. But it is also great fun, even without your friends. If you are lucky, like I was, you will make friendships that will last for years. I got on so well with one of my partners that we have visited each other’s houses as holidays, and indeed the two of us are going camping together this summer. I’d say go for it. It’s also, as I have recently discovered, very good practise for when you go to university, as you prove to yourself early on that you can live away from home.

Go for it. Trust me, it’s well worth it.

Studying abroad: what would you write as a "special requests" for homestay application questionnaire?

Posted on February 21st, 2010 by admin

I want to write that I want internet, do you think that’s ok? How do I phrase that? And what else do you think I should write there?

Also, there’s a question about hobbies. Let’s say I make websites for money, how would you phrase that as a hobby?

Your hobby is "website design".

You can say internet if you want, but I wouldn’t even bother. It’s pretty unlikely not to have internet. Usually special requests would be something more like "Family without dogs as I am mindly afraid of dogs" or something, not little stuff like internet that you are likely to have anyway. I have a friend in Japan who has no internet at home, but she is by far the exception — most exchangers have internet. Granted, it might not be fast, 100% reliable, or wireless, but chances are very good you will have it. My exchange program, Rotary, mostly communicates with students through email, and the only letter I have received was a copy of what I got in an email. (I say this to make the point that the likelihood of exchangers having internet means that important communication will be done online.)
