Buddhist/shinto host families in Japan?

Posted on November 24th, 2010 by admin

I am a recent university student in Tokyo Japan and will be staying in Japan for 2 years. I need a new place to live so for my Asian studies Major, I would like to live with a host family who is shinto and or buddhist. How can I find this kind of host family or homestay in Japan? I am certainly willing to pay rent and work or help at the temples and shrines as part of the experience. I can speak intermediate level japanese and continue to study it in school. Please help.

Thankyou!

Contact the Japan-America Society for information. There are quite a few branches around the country so a Google search for one in your area is the best way.

Does anyone know of any good sites to find a host family in Tokyo? Has anyone with experience found a host family online / how much did it cost?

Any helpful links would be nice. :P

Ghibli Museum with host family, pics and engraved Howl’s Moving Castle ring

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin

It was beautiful. Styled like the buildings in his movies, and lots of plants and water pumps and old fashioned steam-punk things around… Just gorgeous. I wasn’t really allowed to take pictures inside, but I did take a lot outside and I get some video footage of inside at certain places. We all walked around and I was having a fit over just how beautiful everything was.

Then we went to the showing of Hoshi wo Katta Hi (”The Day I Harvested a Planet”), one of Miyazaki’s short films. From the posters I saw outside the theater, I noticed that the main character looked a lot like Howl when he was a young boy, so I was immediately attracted to this movie. But then it started, and it was so good and the soundtrack was so amazingly beautiful that I just fell in love.

As I walked around the gift shop, I was sad that there wasn’t really much Howl’s Moving Castle stuff (it’s my favorite book and the movie adaptation is also a favorite). I got to the section where they had like silverware and glass things… I saw a silver ring with red jewels and I just froze. Engraved on the inside was “Howl & Sophie”. My heart melted instantly and I asked to have a look at it to see if it would fit (since most of the time, rings are way too big for me), and it fit perfectly. I stood there for five minutes staring at the ring, then my host dad came over to ask what was up. I told him that I wanted the ring so bad, and that it was about $127. He talked to the cashier and told me that this was the only store you could get the ring at.

And as I looked at the names in the ring once more, I said, “I’ll buy it.”

After going to the register and getting everything wrapped up, we found out that I had just bought the last ring and they were now sold out. *___*
