What’s the best way to find legitimate homestay agencies/families in Montreal or Quebec City?

Posted on November 24th, 2011 by admin

To be specific, I’m talking about a house sharing situation that doesn’t require the foreigners to be students.

I’m well aware of craigslist, and used it once to find a homestay situation; but I’m interested in exploring other ways to find temporary housing with locals from the cities I want to visit.

Just to clarify, I believe when you say "homestay", you are referring to a process where international students come to visit and stay with a family in another country. Correct?

This might be done so the student can attend college or university but has a place to stay that is safe. Instead of staying at a school dorm, some families that have the space will host a foreign student, essentially giving room & board for a semester or more.

Or it may be done for a foreign relations event. Perhaps a Canadian family hosts an Irish student while the Irish family hosts the Canadian student for a month or two to perform a cultural exchange.

It could also be something much shorter, perhaps just a weekend or a week long.

Your best bet for finding legitimate places that handle this is probably through the school that the international student will be attending. Let’s say you are coming to Montreal from Japan to study English, and will attend McGill. They have a homestay program for Asian students.

The other option is to locate an organization that has been in business for more than just a few years which specializes in homestay programs. Someplace like the ILSC program would probably be a good place to find a family or become a host family.

EDIT:
Okay, so you are actually referring to something more along the lines of what Kate Winslett and Cameron Diaz did in the 2006 movie "The Holiday". My best suggestion would be a not-for-profit site like HomeLink Canada.

You can try an exchange on Kijiji or Craigslist, but you never know who is answering your advertisement. I would worry about a total stranger that was not at least screened by some organization.

How does one find a homestay in Africa?

Posted on November 21st, 2011 by admin

I’ve had a passion for Uganda since 1st grade. I went there last summer with my dad and I want to go there for summer 2012 again but try to stay for a longer period of time. I would love to find some type of program that would allow this, Invisible Children however does not have trips to Uganda at this time…Does anybody know of any programs?

I know what you mean! I went to Honduras this spring and I have a heart and passion for helping those around the world. I am trying to save up $6,000 to go to the Philippines next summer! Are you a Christian? Maybe ask your pastor if he knows of any missionaries over there?

Should I have a homestay or would it get annoying?

Posted on March 3rd, 2011 by admin

She’s sixteen and spEaks quite good
English, I am fifteen. I am just worried that I’d get annoyed. When I am at home I am usually spending time alone as my brother is much older than me and I don’t speak to my parents much. Also, it would mean whenever I go out with friends, shed be there. She’s a nice girl, bt I know I could get sick of anyone, especially if I’ve only known them one month. She will be staying six months.

I would think this decision is up to your parents!! If it is up to you, I don’t see why not since it’s temporary. You might get to like her.

Gifts to bring to Japan for a homestay?

Posted on January 19th, 2011 by admin

Youth and adults from the USA will be traveling to Japan for a month homestay. We’d like to bring gifts to our host families. I’d appreciate suggestions on gifts that would be enjoyed by the adults and teens in the Japanese host families.
What USA size t-shirt would be most likely to fit a Japanese woman, Japanese man, Japanese 14 year old?
Are there any items that would be considered rude?
Are there any foods that are usually disliked? One of my friends from Japan says that mint-flavored chocolate is not popular. True?
Thanks!

I think your local food is good anyway.

US size is bigger than Japanese size. Like S in US size is M in Japan.

>Are there any foods that are usually disliked?

Not much.

>One of my friends from Japan says that mint-flavored chocolate is not popular. True?

No.

How to host a korean international student for homestay??

Posted on January 12th, 2011 by admin

My family is interested in hosting an international student preferably a korean student at our house. How do I go about doing this homestay thing????? I did put ads up online and plan to put some ads up at my university campus but was wondering if there’s a better way to go about doing this.

My family wants to host a college age student who needs a place to stay but don’t know how to go about doing this since we’ve never done this before.

Thanks

First of all I think you’re so kind when doing this.
I think you should contact one of the nearest universities, I’m sure they will tell you how to do that, maybe there’s already one for you.
It’s convenient for the student, too because it’s not far away from school, so they don’t have to pay much for the transportation.

I wish I had met someone like you before :x

Where’s the best place for a homestay for a teenager in Costa Rica?

Posted on January 1st, 2011 by admin

We are looking for a place with little tourism. We would also request that the place has a Spanish school who accepts teens and gives them freedom. Also, we want the place to have quite a bit to do, as in night life and nature adventures.

Costa Rica is definitely not the place if you’re trying to avoid tourism. It’s probably one of the highest, if not the highest, Latin American countries for tourism. As for night life, San Jose is probably your best bet, but it can be dangerous at night. As for nature adventures, pretty much anywhere outside San Jose seems to be a nature adventurer’s wonderland.

How can I find a long-term homestay in Germany?

Posted on November 23rd, 2010 by admin

I am hoping to study in Germany (specifically Leipzig) for my master’s degree. Particularly for the first year, it may be financially favorable to live in a homestay instead of renting my own apartment, as the difference in expenses between that year and subsequent years will be several thousand euros.

First of all, do I have to pay a long-term host family, or would I be able to find one to host me for free?
Second, what resources are available to find a family to host me?

Most universities have Studentenwohnheime ( dorms) that would be one possibility another one a shared flat ( WG in German) if you want to rent an own apartment be aware they are mostly unfurnished in Germany.

I add you links to search WG and immoscout the biggest German site to find apartments.

Homestay is very unusual in Germany its called Untermiete you can check the local newspaper or post an add in there.

Do you recommend any homestay service to stay at Montreal?

Posted on November 17th, 2010 by admin

I am going to Montreal for 4 months and I will like to find a homestay close to MacDonald campus of McGill university, any recommendation??

Hi from Montreal,

I’ve used the site easyroomate and liked it a lot.
Please exchange emails with pictures and questions about the rules of cohabit.
- What is shared what not, what is included, what is the policy for guests and dates.
- What is expected from you to do.
- Then exchange profiles in Facebook.
- Call him/her (use skype). Give him/her your number.
- Have pictures of your room and the place.
- Have pets?
All of this to make sure is not a fake and for your security.

Show both of you a valid ID with picture the very first day you met.
Take care!

For 1 semester, or a year in an english speaking country. I don’t want to live with a family there, but would rather live with other kids who are from abroad. Any suggestions, ideas or links are welcome…

If you really want to study Abroad then check the website www.rche.net it’s the safest way to go abroad…
