Help with moving to Nepal?
Posted on June 17th, 2010 by admin
I visited Nepal (Kathmandu) last year to take part in a 10 week voluntary placement building a local school in a small village. I lived in a homestay with a nepalese family in the same village. I experienced warmth and hospitality from the nepali people that i had not encountered anywhere else in the world.
I feel in love with Nepal so much that i have decided to upsticks…
Sell all of my stuff.. say goodbye to my family and friends and start a new life in Kathmandu.
I am leaving for Nepal on October 20th 2010. I already know many people out there and i have been fortunate that one of my friends has a job as a TEFL(esl) teacher for me already lined up. The job is temporary for 5 months. Afterwards i will need to look for another job preferably as a TEFL teacher. Or any other job that would be suitable for a British english speaking national.
I also have accommodation and food provided for me for the 5 months to " set me off "….
Again, Afterwards i will have to find somewhere to live in Kathmandu and be able to have enough money to provide for myself.
So i have lots of questions i would like to ask you.
And i would be grateful for ANY info or advice
Sorry to list but there is a lot i would like to know.
1. Which Visa should i apply for if i plan to spend a couple of years (maybe more) in Nepal?
2. How easy is it for a British National to find work in the Kathmandu area?
3. How much is the general cost of living? food etc??
4. How easy is it to find somewhere to live in Kathmandu? Prices etc?
5. Are there many british people living in Nepal?
6. How safe will i be and what is the healthcare like in Nepal?
7. Any other advice or info you could offer me?
Thanks so Much

1. Please apply for a temporary resident visa. You need a local to sponsor you, but in the long term it is a better option. Contact the Nepal embassy in London for details.
2. You will find limited jobs as language teachers or in the tourism sector.
3. You will need at least NRS 30000/- for a small family( food and accommodation) US$ 400+approx
4. You will find plenty of British people temporarily living in Kathmandu.
5. You will be safe but of course you have to take necessary precautions.Health care is private, crowded and expensive.
6. Nepal is a great country to spend a year or two. Friendly and welcoming but urbanizing fast and with rapid growth comes with the ills of a modern society.

My answer to you is, you were there already, and know the feel. now these days life is lot easier to get working visa once you have the job sponsor, but the politically "well you know better." after all Nepal is a very good country to visit and spend good amount of time of the life. Once you get there keep trying searching for New job, now these day lot of ad comes in local paper, even you can apply in British embassy as a local appointee, it will be much easier if you speak Nepali language.
Good luck
