Perth was only 1% Asian in 1970. Since 1975 after vietnamese refugees came here it is getting more. Of all the immigrants living here about 50% English (Poms), 10% New Zealanders (Kiwis), 20% Eurpoean (Wogs), almost 15% Asian (Chinks), 5% Other (like Yanks).
Vast Majority of the population are 1st generation or more native born or aboriginal.
Some aboriginal louts hang around the city and pick on asians in particular but it's not a big problem, they'd pick on anybody.
Go to the Perth City Library at 573 Hay St to get all the news from home. It seems to be the meeting place for a lot of asians studying here.
You might find out about accommodation thru them as well. Maybe someone is going home and you can get their place when they leave.
References :
Probably half of perth IS asian. I lived there for 22 years and I am white aussie, when I was at highschool probably 50-60% of my friends were asian. I think at night just avoid northbridge during the week, on the weekends it is very busy and fine. I don't think perth is dangerous, not compared to the other capital cities.
I don't know much about accommodation sorry but maybe ring up one of the universities and ask if there are any students looking to share houses because they usually have that stuff up on notice boards.
Have fun :D Perth is great
References :
I am a perth girl

hostels would be a good idea, you will be with other young people, it is central in perth and they are a good price. I have supplied a link with quite a few webpage for you too look through and see if you like any of them.
Tips would be the same no matter what country your in. Keep your eyes open, don't do anything stupid or flash money about. don't walk the streets at night by yourself in Perth. There are many asians living in perth, and although you will sometimes meet with some racism, on the whole most Australians are very accepting. We are a multicultural society which is made up from many different cultures.
References :
http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/wa/pertharea/perth/directory/hostels

Please dont worry, I think you will find perth rather quiet and reasonably safe, the only place you could possibly run in to trouble is in northbridge (next to the city) and that is if you get into the wrong bunch of drunk people and idiots.
And no, we aren't against asian people!! I am sure there are some racist people, as in all places, but its nothing you will have to worry about, and if you know people here, your time will be much easier...

I have been told that perth is quite comparable with canada in its people and general atmosphere, not the weather though, so if you are coming late in the year dont bother with warm clothes!

My advice re accomodation, look up a backpackers hostel in the city to begin with and go from there with finding something more long term.
I hope this helps
