I would recomend a hostel. the people there are very friendly and will be happy for you to come out with them while you geting used to london. You could also try gumtree.com for short rental

There is a Youth Hostel YHA close to Saint Paul's. Check website.

The only cheap place I can think of is WYMCA. Next will be B&B. There is no cheap place to stay in London than those two areas. The rule is that the furthest you go from central London the cheapest.Hence, check B&B in the SW, SE, or E areas. All the best!/
