Rent for homestay in Japan?

Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin

I will soon be staying with a homestay family in a small town in Japan. I will live as part of their family, but I would also like to provide them with some money each month so that they do not feel too put upon. How much is reasonable? (In USD.)

I stayed at a homestay in Tokyo last year and paid 4000 yen a day including all meals. This is around 35 USD.

You will have no need to pay any rent. Homestay programs are voluntary and the families that volunteer are looking to have a cultural exchange. I suggest to bring the family a gift from you and your family. Keep it low cost and practical. Paying them money for rent or homestay could be misconstrued or mis-interpreted. I suggest confirming with the organization that is sponsoring the homestay program.
