What should I pack for France/any tips for homestaying?

Posted on June 17th, 2010 by admin

I’ll be in Rennes, France for about 5 weeks this summer with a homestay family. I’ll also be taking day trips to places like Paris, Versailles, Mont St. Michel, etc. What should I pack, and what are some tips for homestaying with a French family?

Thanks so much!

Most important, learn some French if you have not done so already. If only Good morning, hello, goodbye and thank you.
It breaks the ice, shows you are willing to try French and depending on your accent, fail utterly or are worth redeeming. In 5 weeks they will teach you way more and your accent will improve.

For a home stay, bring the kind of clothes you would bring when staying with a grandparent or older aunt, jeans, T-shirts but also a few nice outfits for dinner out.

Brittany can be cool and wet, but also sunny and hot, so bring clothes for both kinds of weather, including swimming gear and sports shorts if you are part of a group that might have a sports day included. Swimming shorts in France are tight, wide boxer shorts are not allowed in the pool, as too many people wear them all day and they are considered dirty.
And do not forget a sweater and a rain jacket.

You do not need to bring enough clothes for 5 weeks, they will do laundry for you.
