For a gift when you’re leaving them, I think something sentimental would be nice.
Possibly a letter, even if you aren’t very good at Japanese. It’s the thought that counts.
I wouldn’t give them something from the UK or Japan… because
1. If it’s from the UK, they’ll probably be like "why didn’t you give this to me when you came?" and
2. If it’s something from Japan, then they can go out ad get it themselves.

If you’re going to spend your trip with them, then I think something that’ll bring back memories would be nice.

I have given gifts like Maple Syrup, That goes over well. Something sweet, and make sure you know if the people have certain dietary concerns like vegan people or something.

maybe you can buy them a lovely ornamental plant or bonsai arrangement for their home. you’d have a better idea of what kind or size to get once you’re there.

or perhaps a book that you’ve written a short but thoughtful note in?

or some high quality coffee beans or tea leaves?
