Any recommended homestay around Kota Kinabalu?

Posted on February 15th, 2010 by admin

I want to find homestay which do have cultural practice, welcoming tourists, more to village activites, interaction with villagers around kota kinabalu. Any recommendation, please. Thanks in advance.

There is pretty nothing of the homestay type you are looking for in the vicinity of KK (it is pretty modern around KK, believe me). Many small backpacker lodges say "homestay" but they are nothing more than nice, not overly expensive city lodges; I suspect you have found out…. To find true homestay you have to go a bit further away from KK. There is a homestay website for Sabah – http://www.sabah-homestay.org/ – (if you have not yet come across it), and it features many interesting places though those taking part in this project are not "true homestay" programmes any more as they must have certain facilities for visitors.

"Homestay" actually comes quite naturally to Sabahans, and when you travel here you will be able to make friends, who take you to their house and you can stay the night there, no problem. It is a cultural and historical time-honoured tradition. If you have some time to spare travel to Sabah, install yourself for a few days at a ‘homestay’ backpacker’s lodge in KK and ask around. Or try to get acommodation in Donggongon, where you can make lots of Kadazan and Dusun friends. You’ll find yourself at their house in no time, and maybe you will find it a bit difficult leaving them, they are so nice and hospitable!
