Protecting money and passport abroad?

Posted on May 23rd, 2010 by admin

I’m traveling to Spain and Morocco next month for 2 weeks and I want to know what is the best way to protect my money and passport when I’m out in the city. I will be staying in a combination of hotels, hostels and homestays (I do not know the family). Is it best to keep all my money and passport on me at all times? Take only the money I need and leave the rest buried in my suitcase? Take or leave my passport in my suitcase? Should I keep my luggage locked?

I’ve been to Morocco a few times and here is what I do. I bought a nylon passport case on a string. It has a couple of zippers on it, I can also keep my cash in that and always put a copy of my return flight in it too. I wear my passport under my clothes so it is always with me. Keep a lock on your luggage too, and keep your money divided up. I bring a Bible and put it in a zippered Bible case with a small backpack lock on it…had $200 stolen while going through the security in New York airport a few years ago. You can also bring your ATM card if you need to get more money. If using it in Morocco, only withdraw money while the bank is open because if you enter the wrong PIN number the machine will keep your card until you can go inside and show ID to get it back. Pickpockets are notorious in tourist areas both in Morocco and Europe, so if you have a purse, make sure you keep it close to your body while you are browsing through the medinas or boarding a train or bus or other crowded tourist areas.

Best to take everything you really can’t lose with you. Preferably keep the big money and passport in a money belt or Under Clothing Waist Wallet like http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/under-clothing-waist-wallet-p-84.html.
And spending cash in your wallet, pocket, whatever. This way a pick pocket can get some cash and then leave you alone rather than wonder where you really keep your money.
Also good to keep photocopies of your passport etc in a separate place so if you lose the original a replacement is easier to get.

if u are staying in a hotel and want to go out…..take a photocopy of the pass port and keep the passport in the hotel…..and when it comes to money try to take travellers card or credit card…..but dont use it unless its emergency and u dont have any money with you…….take certain amount of money u would like to spend…if they are finished use the cards.

best – use the safety deposit box in the hotel and only take what you need/can afford to lose
2nd best – money belt – no good if you are going swimming
don’t leave valuables in your suitcase. if you must then lock it

I use a money belt for passport, CCs, ATM and cash reserve. I leave a photocopy of my passport, emergency numbers for CCs, ATM etc buried in my luggage. I don’t keep anything I can’t afford to lose in my back pockets. If I was female I wouldn’t carry a purse or fanny pack. I wear pants or shorts with cargo pockets. I am a little more cautious when traveling. If it feels bad I move on. Otherwise have fun.
