There are lots of places to stay, and generally Barcelona is a very safe city. Most of the crime that happens is quite petty (watch your wallet, camera, etc.) and most of the people vicitimized are tourists that aren't being very careful. I don't know anything about homestays, but I can ask around. One can also rent apartments for short term periods of time. Friends of mine have done that when they have family come into town. It's typically cheaper than a hotel, and includes a kitchen.
