Bob’s Homestay

Bob’s Homestay is situated at the banks of Johor Lama (Old Johor) River which leads to the bigger Johor River and stands at the most important site of the state’s historical trail. Across the slow flowing river covered by mangrove, Kubu Budak (Kids Fort) is one of the historical forts built to protect the old Johor government from Portuguese ships and other offensive invasions.
The owner is none other than Mohd Bahari, fondly known as Bob. He bought the piece of land with retirement in mind. For almost three years he developed the three acre secluded real estate by extending the existing house and adding a dormitory or two to accommodate his friends who comes by to fish and spend their holiday in this beautiful place. With each visitor that he received, he was being convinced to accept payment and be compensated for his hospitality. Finally, his friends managed to persuade him to turn his home into a homestay.
A retired bank officer, Bob who hails from Batu Pahat, conceptualised the dream of retiring in a village by the sea. As soon as he opened up his home, he has added a double storey bungalow to cater to those who prefer a more private home-styled accommodation. He built a jetty, planted turf grass, constructed a big enclosure for farm animals such as chickens, ducks, geese, goats and rabbits to give visitors a chance to pet these domestic animals and continually made personal touches to the enchanting piece of property at Bob’s Homestay.
The expenditure over three years was about RM1 million, Bob and his partner opened the doors of Bob’s Homestay in March 2007 and visitors could not stop the praises for the exceptionally homely and rustic feel that the homestay offered. They often complimented on how beautiful the place is overlooking the estuarine and mangrove swamp. “Maybe the majestic view of the Johor River estuary is the thing that captivates the guests,” Bob said with a big smile. Besides the sea environment, the peripheral area is also rich with greeneries and as we entered the homestay, we will pass a Johor Lama village which is very close to Johor’s historical value. “You may get lucky to find remnants of archaeological remains such as broken porcelain from the Chinese dynasties,” Bob added. Some of his own findings were exhibited on a dugout boat decorated along the walkway in front of his house.
A lot of activities are offered at Bob’s Homestay and the most interesting thing to do is to take a cruise on the river. You will be taken along the historical trails of Johor River and see the Johor Lama Fort from the sea or visit the nearby Kubu Budak. Besides kayaking or cycling you can opt to relax and enjoy the quiet ambience. Otherwise, fishing enthusiasts might choose to fish at the nearby jetty or at the available floating houses. If you want to experience the kampong way of life, the village folks are friendly and watching the sunset along the riverbank is truly captivating. Adding up to such an amazing holiday, a seafood barbeque setting could also be prepared while having a karaoke session until late night.
Situated 27 km from Kota Tinggi and about two hours drive from Johor Bahru, Bob’s Homestay offers an affordable two days/one night package at RM110 per person including meals and barbeque with free use of the kayak. You may even sing your heart out with the karaoke set with no extra charge. The double storey bungalow can be rented at RM280 per night while other packages are considered very affordable.
